Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?
Joshua Cohen’s review in Tablet Ezine of Judith Shulevitz’s The Sabbath World: Glimpses Of A Different Order Of Time is the most misleading title I have ever read, even mine, and I try to be obscure. Cohen’s subtitle is: the sabbath is but one of the Jewish contributions to the science of time keeping time. Then the review has little to do with the science of keeping time.
Hence my review of Cohen will have little to do with his review or the book it’s based on.
Oddly enough the Jewish or Hebrew conflict with the rest of the world began with a time keeping incident. The time was c. -2000 and the place was Ur of the Chaldees. The matter was the transition from the Age of Taurus to that of Aries, yes, it was the dawning of the Age of Aries.
Josephus gives us this account in his History Of The Jews. Whether the dispute was the cause of the formation of the Terahites who then morphed into the Hebrews can’t be known but as the present day Jews have pinpointed their origin to the moment Abram led the Terahites through the piles of sheep dung on the way out of The Land Between The Rivers seventy years after their formation it was clearly the dawning of the Age of Aries.
Aries and Taurus are of course signs of the Zodiac of which there are twelve to match the terrestrial year. The Astrological Age, of course, was based on the Great Year of approx. 25,000 terrestrial years caused by the wobble of the planet being off balance. This is also known as the Precession Of The Equinoxes. This modest achievement in time keeping was made before the Jews made their entry unto the scene so they can take no share in its discovery. Nevertheless, Terah, if there was such a he, found fault with the system and through his subordinate, Abram, called the Sumerians to account.
Perhaps not having a clear idea of the issues Abram claimed that rather than the Age changing and a new religious archetype ascending that time stopped and the archetype of the preceding Taurian Age was eternal. The Taurian archetype had been Saturn so during the succeeding Arien Age the Jews, or Hebrews, were accused of worshipping Saturn. Beginning a long tradition of denying the obvious the Jews, of course, denied the fact labelling their acusers anti-Semites or whatever term they used in those days beginning another long tradition.
The upshot was that Abram, who Josephus describes as a greater Astrologer than any Chaldean, pressed his point of view so obstreperously that the Chaldeans sentenced the Hebrews to exermination beginning yet another long tradition. Lifting their skirts the Hebrews high stepped it through the sheep dung to to yet another religious center, Harran.
The epic wanderings of the Hebrews/Jews began over a dispute of Time. It was certainly time for them to leave. And time and time again through time the dispute continues. How will it end?
